Westar Energy Novice Dove Hunt Sept. 3-6 - Jul. 28, 2010The Westar Energy Green Team will host a dove hunt for youth and novice hunters at Jeffrey Energy Center, north of St. Marys, on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 3-6. Hunts will be held on cut sunflower or wheat stubble, guided by volunteers in the early morning or late afternoon. Shells, decoys, and drinks will be provided.

DUSTING UP FOR DOVES: HUNTING SEASON ALMOST HERE - Aug. 19, 2009
PRATT - It's mid-August, and hunters young and old anxiously await the traditional opening of fall hunting seasons, which begins when dove season opens Sept. 1. Preparation begins when hunters dust off their shotguns and wingshooting skills with a little clay target shooting, the most important part of preparation.
DOVE BANDING PROGRAM RELIES ON HELP FROM HUNTERS - Aug. 05, 2009
PRATT -- For the seventh year, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) is cooperating in a mourning dove banding project involving more than two dozen states. The agency is asking dove hunters to look for leg bands on the mourning doves they shoot during the regular dove season, which runs Sept. 1-Oct. 31 and Nov. 7-15. The purpose of this banding project is to estimate annual survival rates, harvest rates, and distribution of the harvest, as well as to refine techniques for future dove-banding projects. This data is necessary for understanding population trends and responsibly managing dove harvests.

KDWP Wildlife Area Plantings Attract Doves - Aug. 27, 2008
To enhance dove hunting opportunity, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has managed a number of fields on wildlife areas specifically to attract doves. Management techniques include standing or mowed sunflowers, unharvested strips of wheat and burned crop stubble, mowed wheat, mixed plantings, or any combination of techniques. Some areas will have restricted hunting dates or times, and others may be restricted to youth and disabled hunters.
Youth/ Novice Dove Areas At Brzon and Jamestown Wildlife Areas - Aug. 27, 2008
Fall hunting begins on Sept. 1 when dove season opens, and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks managers at Brzon and Jamestown wildlife areas, near Concordia, have planted fields to attract doves. For the opening two weeks of the season, portions of the area will be restricted to youth and novice hunters only.
